Testimonials

Meet some of our members and see what they have to say about their experience with CrossFit Steele Creek!

Kelly F. – I wanted to thank you and your staff for pushing me to get strong and in the best shape I’ve ever been in.  As a 34 yr old mother of 2, I’m more than thrilled with the progress I’m making.  I didn’t look this good in high school!

In 2011, I lost 20 pounds by switching to a Paleo diet.  While I was happy with my size, it was clear I needed to tone up desperately.  I was running 4 miles a day and while it was mentally nice, it made no noticeable improvements physically.  It was very frustrating.  I had some CrossFitting friends who were pushing me toward it but, like a lot of girls, I was afraid to weight train.  I was afraid of “getting bulky” and terrified of adding a pound.  Fortunately, a few scary articles on “skinny fat” bodies was en

ough to get me signed up.   Since joining CFSC, I’ve been literally dropping inches (totally wasn’t expecting that) and toning up and adding muscle and it’s been a beyond awesome experience.  I look and feel great.  I’ve never said that before in my life.  I can’t wait to see what the next 4 months will bring!

Lis D. – On December 18, 2010 I decided that I needed to take control of my health. After many discussions and inspiration from friends, I took a leap and walked in for my first day of Crossfit. This was the progression I made between week 2 and week 15 of exercising regularly and cleaning up my eating. Thank you CrossFit Steele Creek – you changed my life. One month later, I found out I was pregnant…

…Now, at week 53 of Crossfit, and week 32 of pregnancy, I still do not weigh as much as I did when I walked through those doors. I have had a happy, healthy pregnancy, and have continued with CrossFit throughout. As much as I loved losing the weight, gaining it again has been the best part of my year. :) And thank you to all of my CF buddies who have encouraged, su

pported, and laughed with me throughout this past year. You are the best!

Paul C. – I came into CrossFit Steele Creek with my wife, Megan, around mid October, 2010. Having heard about CrossFit from a bunch of my prior military friends I wanted to give it a shot as well as do something active that I could share with my spouse.  I decided to let her have a go first as I was still a little reluctant and I kept working out with my buddy at work in our ‘traditional’ gym.  After a few visits back to CFSC during this time I just fell in love with it.  CrossFit reminds me of working out in the military, it was something I enjoyed, everyone embraced the suck and just pushed through it, kept on going saying “we all are in this together”.  That communal mentality is something I had been missing and it helps push me further and harder every day. So with that I found myself signing up as well on Nov 1, 2010, and took the top 2 photos you see.  I don’t remember the exact figures but I was over 30% body fat and out of shape, unless you count round, it is technically a shape. I quickly and vehemently sought the teachings of the coaches for everything in and out of the gym.  We had a ‘Zone Diet’ challenge which got me heavily involved and now fully entrenched into eating the ‘Zone’ 24/7, a

nd I LOVE IT.   I am now; the bottom 2 photos, down from a 40″ to 32″ pant size, down from XL (or XXL in some cases) to just Large shirts.  I’ve lost roughly 50 lbs over the last year!

Thank you to the coaches: Cory, Brian, Aaron, Dave, Lisa, Dawn, Kyra, and Amelia.  You have all helped me in some way over the past year and I wouldn’t be where I am today without your continued motivation, pushing, form correction, and most of all passion for what you do.

If this picture inspires at least one of my friends to get out and live a healthier lifestyle then I’ll be happy. You can do it people, just get out there and ‘Do work’. You’ll be happier because of it!
This is only the beginning, I’ll keep working, keep pushing, and keep striving to be a healthier me for my wife and my son.

Norelle I. – I have been with CFSC since they opened their facility. I have enjoyed watching our crossfit family grow. This place is amazing and the energy is always exhilarating. The coaches are very knowledgeable and motivating. especially, when I wasn’t feeling like working out. This place is more than just a gym, its a family. It has truly changed me and I love everything about it. When I first joined CFSC I was 50 lbs over weight and was not happy about my physical appearance. I kept working hard and kept on the regiment that the very helpful coaches of CFSC had made for us. within a few months I started noticing changes not only physically but also confidence in myself. I felt relieved after seeing results since I had tried so many things that never worked for me. now i am 50 lbs lighter and in the best shape of my life. After this accomplishment, I feel extremely motivated to keep striving forward to get even more fit.

Adi I. – I am in the army and my motivation to join crossfit was to get in better shape. I was just planning to come in for a little while and get in shape, but once I started doing crossfit at CFSC, I noticed that it was more than just the workouts, it was being in the prescence of a great crowd. I was like some other people who say that ” we can just look at the workouts online and do it at a gym” but when I tried that, I noticed it wasn’t the same as i wasn’t as motivated to workout by myself, I got funny looks in the gym as i grunted trying to do my power cleans as they were strollling on their treadmills. The atmosphere at CFSC makes m

e workout harder and push myself even harder. The coaches at CFSC are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have approached all of them to get some advice about work outs and diets.

An Email From Cami B. Subject “Two Surprises” -
Surprise #1:  I just attempted to wear a pair of slacks that have not seen my rear end in well over 18 months!  They slide on without effort and with LOTS of comfort!

Surprise #2:  I found $46 in the back pocket!

Thank you for all you do for me!  I APPRECIATE you and Brian immensely!

Have a great weekend,
Cami

Crystal F.- Below, you will see the differences between Paleo with Crossfit vs. Vegetarian with Yoga.  Not sure there is a huge difference, but I feel great.  Sometimes I feel like a weenie when I struggle to get through a Crossfit workout, but I know that it is worth it in the end and I feel accomplished when I do!  This is a competition between a girl and I at work using the US Navy/Marine formula for calculating body fat.  I would be interested in getting a more accurate number, but this works for us for now.

Regardless, if you take out the comparison, you can see that overall I lost 10.8 pounds, plus 2 inches in my waist, hips, and navel, an inch in my neck (how does that happen?), and a little over 4% body fat.  Slowly but surely, I am on my way to a better me.  Just thought I would say Thank You and share some results.

What is CrossFit?

What is CrossFit?

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

CrossFit is intense, but we strive to make the intensity relative to whatever you are capable of. The workout of the day is the same for everyone, but we can tailor it to meet the needs of each individual. When you walk in to a CrossFit facility, you may see a 70 year old, a 25 year old, a teenager, and a firefighter all working alongside each other at their own capacity, but toward the same end result.

CrossFit can be intimidating. To a new client the gym might look like a warehouse full of strong, fit people lifting heavy weights really quickly, lots of times. The beauty in all of it, however, is that the programming is not just for the elite athlete, it is for everyone who is willing to show up and give their best effort.

What We Do

CrossFit is the most effective and efficient general fitness program in the world. We use constantly varied, functional movements at a high intensity that delivers dramatic fitness results for crossfiters of all levels of skill and experience:
Constantly Varied: You will rarely do the same workout twice at CrossFit Steele Creek. By doing something different every time you work out you keep the body guessing and eliminate plateaus and boredom common in traditional programs.  Certain “benchmark” workouts, however, are repeated every 2-3 months to measure performance improvements.

Functional movements: Our goal is to prepare our athletes for life’s obstacles. We do that by using training that mimics life – running, jumping, throwing, squatting, pulling, pushing, lifting.

High intensity: Performing vigorous exercise in a high intensity way is the most effective way to elicit positive changes in performance and body composition. We do this by timing most of our workouts and completing them as fast as safely possible.

CrossFit for Everyone

All levels, all shapes, all sizes, all ages. The ability to scale the workout for any level is one of the reasons that the CrossFit program is so successful. Scalability allows athletes to gauge their progression by measuring the increase in weight/reps or decrease in time in repeated workouts. Scalability allows all athletes to workout together as one community, regardless of fitness level. Scalability also works in both directions. We scale down for newer crossfitters, injured crossfitters and whenever necessary. We scale up for crossfitters who need a more challenging workout in order to achieve optimal results. Classes are run by professional, crossfit-certified coaches who are committed to teaching proper technique, encouraging intensity, and maintaining class structure.

CrossFit for Athletes

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Our proven workouts are designed to train and build stronger, faster, better athletes.  Whether coming off the blocks on a 400m sprint, driving out of a 3 point stance to attack the quarterback or preparing to take a shot on net, the primary goal for all athletes is to be able to perform at their competitive best while reducing the injury potential.

CrossFit for Seniors

Our seniors enjoy life by becoming stronger and fitter and maintaining better coordination and balance.  The fitness regimen that a senior requires to maintain physical independence is the same for a professional athlete looking to maintain physical dominance in his or her sport.  The difference is that we train our seniors by using less weight, fewer reps and more rest.  This gets results because our method allows exposure to the workouts at a challenging and tolerable intensity.

CrossFit for Women

Sometimes women can become intimidated after browsing CrossFit websites and videos. Some women worry that CrossFit will give you “bulky muscles”.  Some women worry that they are not in “good enough shape” to start CrossFit.
At CrossFit Steele Creek approximately half of our crossfitters are female. They range from experienced athletes to those just trying to lose a couple of pounds. The beauty of CrossFit is that every exercise is scaleable to your fitness level even if you are a beginner. You will NEVER be asked to do something that will jeopardize your safety and our program focuses on giving exercises to burn fat and boost the formation of lean muscle. You will, however, be asked to use every muscle in your body to perfect your form, ultimately leading to a rewarding workout and results in a short period of time.

CrossFit for Kids & Teens

Whether your child is a budding athlete or just wants to have fun while they get fit, CrossFit is the answer.  Our program is designed to build self-confidence by helping young adults become fit and reach their full potential.  We tailor the workouts to build muscle, strength and speed, at a level appropriate for the growing body.

CrossFit provides an incredible support system and your classmates will be there to support you while pushing at the same time. In time, you will begin to do things that you once believed impossible and you will feel incredibly empowered and thankful. You WILL see results as long as you never give up.

Is CrossFit for you?

The best way to see if CrossFit for you is to try it for yourself.  That is why our facility offers a free week of classes in our facility for all new members.  Click on the Getting Started page to get more information on starting at our CrossFit facility.

How to Select the Right CrossFit for You

You may be brand new to CrossFit and just checking it out for the first time, or you may be a CrossFit veteran that is looking for a gym you can excel at.  Whichever category you are in, it is important that when choosing a fitness facility that you evaluate some key factors.  Below is a list of what many CrossFitters find important, and how we feel we, at CrossFit Steele Creek, set ourselves apart from other area fitness facilities.  We recognize that CrossFit facilities are very different then your traditional gym settings, and often each CrossFit can vary tremendously from one another.  Although we strive to be the best, we acknowledge we are not the best fit for everyone, and encourage athletes/new members to evaluate more than more gym before starting.

Location

CrossFit, just like any other fitness program requires you to SHOW UP!  It is important to pick a location that is convenient to you.  Check for locations not only near your home and work, but also along your commute between.  CrossFit Steele Creek is conveniently located in Southwest Charlotte in the Steele Creek Area.  We have convenient hwy access to I-485 and I-77.  Keep in mind that location is just one factor.  We also have several members that will drive past other facilities to go to a facility that meets other needs for them.  For more information on our location click here.

Equipment

You will find that CrossFit gyms vary greatly from traditional mega gyms.  You won’t find rows of cardio equipment and weight machines that only each perform just a few isolated actions.  Instead you will find free weights, barbells, kettlebells, pull- up bars, dip bars,  jump ropes, plyometric boxes, medicine balls,  rowers, mats, etc.  It is important that there is plenty of equipment for each class.  For more information and to see pictures of some of our equipment that CrossFit Steele Creek offers click here.

Layout, Appearance, and Size of Facility

The layout and appearance of the gym should be neat, organized, inviting, and shouldn’t feel cramped.  The size of the facility can also play a big part of this. Cramped small spaces can present safety hazards if there are too many people in a class.   Although, we can tell you from our experience of starting out in a 1600 sqft. gym; that this can be accomplished in even a small space with organization, good utilization of outdoor space, and proper class scheduling.  Now that we have grown to over a 9,000 sqft. CrossFit facility, the largest in Charlotte, we still apply the same organizational skills and class scheduling principles to make sure equipment is easily found and utilized, while also providing a safe workout environment. To see pictures of our facility click here.

Class Schedule

Make sure to check the facilities class schedule.  Unlike a traditional gym you will receive professional coaching and programming every time you come to the gym which requires you to come at a scheduled class time.  See if the facility you are checking out has a variety of class times that fit your schedule. At CrossFit Steele Creek we offer a variety of class times, and are always open to suggestions of additional class times, if we have several members that can attend.  Ask if the facility you are looking at also has a variety of additional specialized classes available, not only the Workout of the Day.  At CrossFit Steele Creek we also offer CrossFit Endurance, Olympic Lifting, Soft Tissue Mobility & Flexibility and CrossFit Kids Classes in addition to our Workout of the Day classes.  To see our current class schedule click here.

Programming

Due to equipment, space, and types of members a facility has,  most gyms do not follow the exact programming on CrossFit.com.  Some gyms have strength bias in their programming and some have a metabolic conditioning or endurance bias in their workouts.  Some may predominately program short workouts, and some predominately long workouts.  At CrossFit Steele Creek we attract everyone from strength to endurance focused athletes, and have a variety of coaching expertise on our staff.  That is what we try to focus on varying our programming as much as possible.  We strive to incorporate all aspects on a weekly basis and constantly vary strength, metabolic conditioning, as well as vary the length of the workouts often.  Our goal is to always keep our members and their bodies guessing what is going to come next!  This keeps our workout results from plateauing and boredom effect from setting in. To see the workout of the day click here.

Coaching

The thing that we feel sets apart the regular CrossFits from the premiere CrossFit gyms is the coaching staff.  The ugly truth is that in theory someone could take a weekend course, pass a test, and be able to call themselves a trainer.  At CrossFit Steele Creek we require that all of our coaches have at least done a year of CrossFit training and have been a member of our facility prior to coaching at CrossFit Steele Creek.  Our owners, are also Chiropractors in addition to being CrossFit Certified and have a great focus on form and injury prevention.  That is why they have also chosen coaches that can demonstrate a great understanding of making corrections to form, and can modify workouts appropriately for members that are just beginning training, those with injuries and those rehabbing from injuries.  Several of our coaches have backgrounds in the medical field, kinesiology, and exercise physiology prior to CrossFit, as well as several being fire fighters and first responders.  Additionally many of our instructors  have additional certifications and seminars as our gym encourages our coaches to constantly add to their coaching skills and knowledge base. For more information on our owners and instructors click here.

New Member Classes

If you are a CrossFit Newbie this one should be particularly important to you.  Does the CrossFit you are looking at have new member introduction classes?  CrossFit is very different from traditional gym training and even the most experienced traditional gym goer often finds benefits in CrossFit introduction classes.  At CrossFit Steele Creek in addition to our Free Fundamentals class, we also have a 4 class On-Ramp Course that we require all members new to CrossFit to attend.  This class will teach form and function of the typical exercises in CrossFit and free weight training as well as acclimate the member into the intensity of CrossFit workouts by starting them out in shorter, scaled down workouts.  This is to give the new member a knowledge base of correct form on exercises before entering regular group classes as well as ease them into a new type of training allowing their bodies to adapt more quickly.  For more information on CrossFit Steele Creek’s On-Ramp Course click here.

Community

If you are new to CrossFit this part of the gym may be very different to you as well.  CrossFit workouts are designed to get you to push yourself with others and tends to develop a camaraderie among members.  CrossFit Steele Creek  is not the place that you push your ear buds in and walk by nameless people everyday.   We are not here to chat during a workout, but to work hard and to push and learn from each other.  This is a place where you will get to know the other members and coaches as they will help the new members get settled into CrossFit style workouts, and will be there with you to cheer you on when you are struggling, or to cheer you on an awesome day when you’re setting a personal record.  At CrossFit Steele Creek we encourage these relationships, as they help keep you accountable and wanting to come to the gym each day.  We also have several social events throughout the year for the whole gym to get together and promote our CrossFit Steele Creek community. To see our Facebook Page click here.

Children

Do you need to bring your children to the gym?  This maybe a big determining factor for you.  Some gyms offer child care, some have a kids room, some just let your kids come in, and some don’t allow kids at all.  At CrossFit Steele Creek we do not provide child care at this time, but we do have a kids room that your children can play in while you workout.  Please keep in mind this room is provided so the kids have a safe place to play and do not run out on the gym floor that can be dangerous during a workout, and you are still responsible for the supervision of your child.  CrossFit Steele Creek does also offer CrossFit Kids classes in which children 4-12 can attend.  The classes are supervised and instructed by a certified CrossFit Kids instructor.  For more information on CrossFit Kids click here.

Pricing

There are several factors that can affect the cost of a membership of a CrossFit gym including the location and size of the facility, the amount of classes and types of classes offered,  the amount and quality of the gym equipment, and  the experience and accessibility to the coaching staff.   We acknowledge that we are not the most inexpensive facility in the area, but we feel once you compare our facility to others you will understand our need to charge the rate that we do.  For more information on our membership information click here.

Does it fit you?

After weighing out all of these factors there is one more big question you should ask yourself.  Where do you feel the most comfortable?  Where do you feel like you fit in the most?  Next to home and work, if utilized properly the gym should be the next place you see the most!

CrossFit Kids

What is CrossFit Kids?

***CrossFit Kids is on hiatus until our CrossFit Kids Instructor is back from maternity leave.  We will let you know when we are back!***

CrossFit Kids is not simply a scaled down version of CrossFit, it is entirely absolutely CrossFit geared and designed for a special population and the specific developmental needs of that population.  (neurological, cognitive, motor)

CrossFit Kids is the principal strength and conditioning program for many young athletes and the primary P.E. program for many home schools, charter schools.  It is used by athletic teams, martial arts schools and many parents that want their kids to grow up healthy, strong and have a life long love of working out thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity.
Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely regardless of whether or not they play athletics. Athletics is a specialized pursuit.  Our goal is to support the specialist, but reward the generalist.

The CrossFit Kids program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for 4 year olds and elite high school athletes. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.  The needs of our second graders and our high school wrestler differ by degree not kind.

CrossFit Kids Steele Creek

At CrossFit Kids Steele Creek we currently have two different age groups:

Little CrossFitters – Ages 4-7

CrossFit Kids – Ages 8-12

Our classes are designed for both boys and girls and kids of all fitness abilities.  At CrossFit Steele Creek our Kids Classes are geared to make Fitness Fun!!  With kids it is important for them to work and play hard but also to associate fitness with being something that is fun and that they want to do!

Our Current Fees are $5 per child per class for children whose parents are members and $10 per child per class for children that do not have CrossFitting parents.  Please see our on-line calendar for our current schedule.

CrossFit Kids Steele Creek Staff

Dr. Lisa Molinaro is our CrossFit Kids Director and is a Certified CrossFit Kids Instructor and CrossFit Level 1 Trainer.  With Dr. Molinaro’s doctorate in Chiropractic , as well as her high school and college experience of coaching and then directing summer camps she has health care, bio-mechanical, and nutritional knowledge as well as the experience of working with children’s fitness to put together a highly effective and fun kids health & fitness program.

About Nutrition for Kids & Teens

Sane nutrition for kids in 150 words

Our goal with kids isn’t to get them on the zone, but to get them to think and make good choices about what they eat. Our goal is to teach them very basic concepts, sugar is bad, protein is good and you need to eat some in every meal. Nuts and seeds are good fats. Eat them, don’t avoid them. Pasta, white bread, and white rice are not that good for you, stuff that’s red, yellow, green and found in the fruit and vegetable aisle is good for you. Eat a lot of it.

Look at your plate, make a fist, eat that much meat every meal; turn your hand over and fill it with nuts and seeds, eat that much good fat, fill the rest of your plate with stuff you found in the fruit and vegetable aisle. Fill your plate this way at every meal, don’t eat more.
